Now, when I log into my account, I can choose to have my passport or driving license checked against a video selfie. It’s a voluntary scheme, but if I sign up, I’ll get a shiny new icon on my profile, verifying the authenticity of my age and likeness. This is a welcome move, especially considering how often the dating app has been targeted by fraudsters. Victim Support, a charity, has applauded the initiative but also suggested that platforms like Tinder must “go further.” As in making ID verification mandatory across all dating apps would be more robust.

Romance fraud, also known as catfishing, is a devastating crime that is pretty common nowadays. It involves a person entering a relationship while pretending to be someone else, often with the aim of scamming money from them. In an attempt to combat this practice, Tinder’s new system should give users like me more confidence that the people we meet on the app are who they say they are.

Users who verify their account with a photo will receive a blue camera icon badge, and those who only prove their Tinder ID is authentic will get a blue ID icon badge. Anyone who passes both verification steps will receive a blue checkmark. This system has already been in motion in Australia and New Zealand since 2023, and those who obtained ID verification in these nations have a likelihood of getting a perfect match. That goes around a 67% increase in matches compared to unverified users.

Tinder, the app that’s taken the world by storm with over half a billion downloads, is once again leading the charge in innovation. This time, it’s expanding its verification tool to US, Brazil, and Mexico users. This isn’t a new rodeo for Tinder, which has previously dabbled in selfie verifications and even bestowed blue checkmarks upon celebrities.
